Global Public Theology Conference to Gather in Seoul
The Global Network for Public Theology (GNPT) is pleased to share news of the upcoming Global Ecumenical Public Theology Conference, which will take place in Seoul, South Korea, from 28 September to 1 October 2026. The conference is organised by the Forum Center of International Public Theology, in partnership with Korean ecclesial and academic institutions, and brings together leading scholars, church leaders, and practitioners engaged in public theology from around the world.
Held under the theme“Public Theology, Civil Society, and Sociobiology”, the conference seeks to foster dialogue between theology, the natural sciences, civil society, and public life. The gathering also honours the enduring legacy of the late theologian Jürgen Moltmann, whose work continues to inspire theological engagement with issues of hope, justice, ecology, and public witness.
A major highlight of the conference will be the participation of Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, Moderator of the World Council of Churches Central Committee, who will deliver keynote lectures on ecumenical public theology, public theology and natural science, and the continuing significance of Moltmann’s work for the church and society today.
The programme reflects the growing importance of public theology in East Asia and includes conversations on science and religion, public pneumatology, Minjung theology, ecumenical engagement, and the role of theology in addressing contemporary social and environmental challenges. Scholars from Korea, Europe, North America, and beyond will participate in a shared effort to strengthen global networks of theological collaboration and public engagement.
The conference also highlights the expanding contribution of East Asian voices to global public theology and demonstrates the value of international partnerships for addressing common concerns in church and society. As GNPT continues to foster collaborative scholarship and public witness across diverse contexts, we are delighted to support and promote this important gathering.
