Amsterdam Interim Meeting

19-21 October 2026

Public Theology in a fractured world: Voices, visions, and vulnerabilities

Call for Papers - Workings Groups:

Public Theology in a Fractured World: Voices, Visions, and Vulnerabilities

Our world is marked by deep fractures such as social and political polarisation, ecological crises, violent conflict, misrecognition (such as racism, homophobia, and xenophobia), and new inequalities intensified by technology and migration. At the same time, these fractures reveal profound vulnerabilities that invite theological reflection, voices that call for justice and healing, and visions that reimagine the common good.

This interim meeting seeks to explore how public theologians, rooted in diverse contexts, can engage these fractures with intellectual depth, moral courage, and spiritual imagination. How might public theology foster dialogue and solidarity in divided societies? What resources (scriptural, ethical, and spiritual), enable communities to remain resilient, hopeful, and just? And how can public theology itself remain self-critical and open to learning from the margins?

There are 5 workings groups that will consider abstracts for papers. Please click on the link for each working group below to see the call for papers and submit an abstract for consideration before 22 February 2026.

Working Group A: Political Power, Democracy, and Conflict

Working Group D: Land, soil and water: Healing fractures, making home

Working Group B: Justice, Economy, Labour, and the Conditions of Life

Working Group E: Public Theology Beyond the Echo Chamber: Communication, Culture, and Critique

Working Group C: Embodiment, Gender, Sexuality, and Vulnerability

About the Amsterdam meeting

Following the fully online 7th Triennial Consultation hosted by Fuller Theological Seminary in 2025, the GNPT Executive has agreed that an interim in-person meeting should take place in Amsterdam from 19-21 October 2026 (with Amsterdam Excursions and other events until 23 October, for those who wish to stay longer).

This gathering will provide much-needed space for personal engagement, academic exchange, and collaborative reflection among GNPT scholars and institutions before the next triennial consultation, scheduled for 2028 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Hosted jointly by the Global Network for Public Theology and the Chair for Public Theology and Ethics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), the 2026 meeting will offer a travel-accessible and academically open environment for scholars, practitioners, and postgraduate researchers from across the global GNPT community. Attendance will be capped at approximately 100 participants, ensuring a collegial and dialogical atmosphere.

❋ Intentional Structure

The interim meeting is intended to draw a smaller group of in-person participants to foster dialogue, deep reflection, and collaboration.

❋ A three day program, with extra activities to follow

The conference program is planned from 19-21 October 2026 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. On 22 October there will be opportunities for excursions and experiences, with the inaugural Professorial lecture of Prof. dr. Dion Forster at VU Amsterdam on 23 October.

❋ Five working groups

The interim meeting has 5 working groups in which papers will be presented and dialogue and collaboration can take place.
